Himanta Biswa Sharma And West Bengal Chief Minister Subvendu Adhikari shared a cozy moment at the Assam government’s swearing-in ceremony. In addition to the exchange, the two leaders also hinted at perhaps a shared problem of the two states, that of infiltrators.
Photos posted by Subhendu Adhikari on X showed the two BJP leaders hugging and smiling during the event, emphasizing the camaraderie between the party’s key faces in the eastern region.
The conversation became a talking point after Himanta Biswa Sharma said in a witty comment directed at Adhikari: “… bad day for (you know who).”
Adhikari responded in the same vein, writing: “No prizes for guessing, I guess,” followed by a smiley emoji, in an apparent nod to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The moment comes at a time when both Assam and West Bengal have made infiltration a major political and administrative concern. Sarma has consistently made Assam’s illegal immigration central to his government’s agenda, while Adhikari, after becoming West Bengal chief minister, has sharpened the BJP government’s rhetoric on border security, demographic change and alleged cross-border infiltration.
The public friendship between the two leaders comes as an attempt to present a unified eastern regional narrative around national security and identity politics.
The interaction also highlighted the growing political alignment between the BJP governments in Assam and West Bengal, with both leaders increasingly presenting themselves as the main face of the party’s campaign against infiltration in eastern India.
