Leaders like Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi had earlier appealed to the people not to buy gold, but no government had made such a sweeping ‘Sat Appeal’ to citizens. The nation is shocked,” Kejriwal said.The former Delhi chief minister said he had “three requests” to the prime minister after his recent comments asking people to reduce consumption and spending amid global economic uncertainty.“I have three requests to the Prime Minister. He should inform the nation about the state of our economy today and what is expected in the near future. Today, there are a lot of rumors floating in the market and this is not good for confidence in the economy,” he said.Kejriwal linked the situation to the escalating Iran-US conflict and the wider West Asia crisis, but questioned why India’s response seemed more severe than that of other countries.He said, “We all know this is happening because of the Iran-US war, and the whole world is affected. But no government of any country has made such an appeal to its citizens. It raises doubts that maybe the cause is something else.”The AAP leader expressed concern over what he described as the burden being shifted disproportionately on the middle class.“The middle class is very patriotic, but why is the entire burden being put on them only? The first sacrifice should have come from the government,” Kejriwal said.His comments came after Prime Minister Modi spoke in Secunderabad on Sunday, urging citizens to change their eating habits in response to global economic pressures and disruptions caused by conflicts in West Asia.The Prime Minister urged people to work from home wherever possible, reduce fuel consumption, avoid foreign travel for a year, buy indigenous products, reduce use of cooking oil, adopt organic farming and cut down on gold purchases.Emphasizing the need to reduce import dependence, PM Modi said every household should reduce consumption of edible oil and support natural farming to save foreign exchange and protect the environment.Highlighting India’s rising fertilizer import bill, the Prime Minister urged farmers to gradually reduce the use of chemical fertilizers.To deal with volatile fuel prices, Prime Minister Modi has also called for greater use of the metro system and public transport, encouraged car-pooling, promoted rail for freight and pushed for widespread adoption of electric vehicles.The appeals come amid tensions in West Asia and a deepening global energy crisis caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil trade route to the Gulf region.
