New Delhi: Piling on Prime Minister Modi for asking people to adopt Covid-type austerity measures in the wake of the crisis in West Asia, opposition parties said the prime minister always takes sacrifices from people to avoid accountability for his failures. They also accused him of taking advantage and asked why he claimed “everything is fine” while campaigning a few days ago.Congress’s Rahul Gandhi said the prime minister’s demands for dos and don’ts were “proof of failure, not advice”. He said, “In 12 years, he has brought the country to such a pass that the people now have to say what to buy, what not to buy, where to go and where not to go. Every time, they put the responsibility on the people so that they can get out of their responsibilities. An uncompromising prime minister can no longer run the country.India’s economy is in recession and the threat to food security is real, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharg alleged. “Modi is repackaging economic failure as moral advice,” said party MP Manikom Thakur.SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the government of spreading fear instead of using its endless resources to tackle the crisis. He asked why Modi did not remember the crisis when BJP leaders took thousands of chartered flights and stayed in hotels to campaign. RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav mocked Modi, saying he had said during the 2024 elections, “the opposition will take away your mangalsutra” while he was asking people to stop buying gold two years later.
