Kriti Sanon said- Men still dominate in Bollywood: Female artists work equally hard, yet there is a big difference in fees.
There has been a long standing debate in Bollywood regarding actors’ fees and rising production costs. Now actress and producer Kriti Sanon has also spoken openly on the gender pay gap and patriarchy present in the industry. He said that even today, when the budget in films gets reduced, the fees of actresses are the first to be reduced, whereas the fees of male stars are not affected much. While talking to GQ India, Kriti said that Patriarchy is still deeply present in Bollywood. According to him, makers are still afraid of taking risks with female-lead films because they feel that such films will not be able to do as much business as male-lead films. Kriti raised the question that when both the artists work equally, then why is there such a big difference in fees. The actress also told that many times actresses are asked to reduce their fees in the name of controlling the budget of the film. Whereas, fewer questions are raised on the fees and demands of big male stars. Many filmmakers have already expressed concern about the rising star fees and entourage costs in the industry. Kriti had earlier also said that a lot of money is spent on supporting stars and other unnecessary things, whereas the focus should be on the story of the film. He had said that the expenditure is understandable as per the requirement of a character, but sometimes luxury and unnecessary expenses are also passed on to the producers. He had jokingly said that it is excessive for a star to have two cooks and one chef. Now after becoming a producer, Kriti is understanding the economic pressure of the industry more closely. She says that she wants to make such films where content and talent are given priority and not just the star system. A debate has erupted on social media also regarding Kriti’s statement. Many users supported his statement, while some people raised questions that the big artists themselves should initiate change in the industry.
