West Bengal Governor RN Ravi Mamata Dissolves Cabinet; Paving the way for new BJP government formation

New Delhi: West Bengal Governor RN Ravi on Thursday dissolved Mamata Sarkar’s cabinet, including the state assembly, ahead of forming a new government after the just-concluded assembly elections.According to an official release issued from the Lok Bhavan in Kolkata, the Governor exercised his power to dissolve the Legislative Assembly from May 7 under sub-section (b) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India.“This order comes into force in accordance with the constitutional provisions under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution of India,” the statement said.

The split came after the BJP won a landslide victory in the assembly elections and formed its first government in the state.

BJP has strengthened preparations to form the government

BJP has intensified preparations for the swearing-in ceremony. According to news agency ANI, party sources said Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to arrive in Kolkata later on Thursday.A meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs is also likely to be held on Friday to elect the leader of the legislative party, sources said.The assembly was dissolved amid heightened political tension in the state after the election results.

Mamata refuses to resign, alleging election irregularities

Outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday addressed a meeting of newly elected Trinamool Congress legislators and said that she will not resign from her post despite the election results.“I will not resign. Let them fire me. I want it to be a black day. We have to be strong,” Banerjee said, ANI quoted party sources as saying.He alleged that Trinamool Congress candidates were “forcefully defeated” and claimed that more than 1,500 party offices were “looted”.“It was not an election, an atrocity,” Banerjee said, while alleging bias by the Election Commission, CRPF and parts of the state machinery, according to ANI.He also claimed that the Trinamool Congress had defeated the BJP “morally” and asserted that the Bharat Bloc had become more united after the Bengal election results.The rejection of Banerjee’s resignation created an unprecedented political situation and raised concerns of a constitutional crisis in the state.
