Got inspiration for singing from mother
Jasmine Sandlas was born on 4 September 1985 in Jalandhar, Punjab. He belongs to an ordinary Punjabi family. Since childhood, he got inspiration for singing from his mother, who encouraged him to sing. She started singing on stage since her school days and started writing songs at an early age.
America’s Journey: Searching for a Better Future
When he was around 12-13 years old, his family shifted to California. She also lived in New York in the initial period. He did not know English, so he had to take admission in the local school. His father had a high-profile job in India and was a law school topper, but left everything for a better future for the children.
Struggle in America: Poverty, Menial Work, and Difficult Conditions
The family faced difficult circumstances in America. The family of six lived in a small room and depended on food coupons. The father had to do odd jobs and even worked at a petrol pump. Mother used to work as a laborer in a factory and pluck cherries.

Papa sacrificed his whole life
My father used to work in a high profile job in India. He was a law school topper, but after going to America one has to study or work for 3-4 years. That’s why Papa sacrificed his entire life for us.
I think his first job in America was at a petrol pump, where he filled petrol. I remember, he was sitting in the snow and had no shoes on his feet. When asked he said that snow shoes are very expensive.

Life was run by food coupons
We lived in houses meant for people below the poverty line, so we got food coupons. My mother worked in a factory and picked cherries. She worked there as a labourer.
When we moved to California, my father re-entered the legal profession and became an interpreter. After this our financial condition became better.
Rift in relationships, death of father and broken heart

This pain pushed Jasmine into a phase where she lost herself. She says- I drowned myself in alcohol. I used to drink too much and still regret it. He was my support at that time. I kept wandering my whole life in search of such peace and home, which I could not find in my childhood.
I started feeling weak and helpless
My mother and family helped me a lot in my recovery. He loved me even when I was broken. My biggest battle was with myself. It was difficult at that time, because as soon as the day started, I would get stuck in old habits. I prayed to God- ‘Please save me, just give me one more chance.
I was feeling very helpless. To come out of that phase, it takes courage to say ‘no’ to things. Family support is important, do not run away from them. When I removed toxic things from life, it felt as if I had got a new life.
