Irrfan Khan’s 6th death anniversary on 29th April is not just a date but a flood of memories – of an artiste who lived acting like reality. His life, character and journey were no less than a film story. Ranjita Kaur has saved this journey in her documentary ‘A Story That Refused to Die’, which shows the making of Paan Singh Tomar and the unseen world of Irrfan. Today its screening has been held at Neeta Mukesh Ambani Cultural Center in Mumbai. This is not just a documentary, but a legacy of those moments. Despite the injury, Irfan continued shooting. He was seen playing with a baby goat. He used to find happiness in every small thing and destroy himself for the sake of truthfulness of the character. In Ranjita’s words, Irrfan was not just an actor but a feeling, who made a place in every heart. His story truly refuses to die, as Irrfan is still alive among us through his work, simplicity and depth. On Irrfan Khan’s 6th death anniversary, Ranjita Kaur narrates some unheard stories of his life. ‘Story That Refused to Die’ – A title, which was born from Irrfan’s thinking Ranjita Kaur says that the title of the documentary is not just a creative name, but is the essence of Irrfan Khan’s thinking and the journey of the film. According to him, making Paan Singh Tomar was not easy. The film faced many difficulties – location challenges, limited resources and shooting constraints. Ranjitha says that she was watching the process from the outside, but was realizing every day that the film was not going to give up. The team became stronger after every problem. During the interview, Irfan said- “This story was not ready to die.” This moment shocked Ranjita. He felt that Irfan had given words to his feelings. That’s why she gives the credit for the title to Irrfan. According to him, this is not just a documentary but a symbol of Irrfan’s life – a journey in which he did not give up despite every difficulty. Why was Irrfan Khan different from everyone else? According to Ranjita, an artist who is in the hearts of common people, the biggest specialty of Irrfan Khan was that it was not necessary to be a cinema expert to understand him. He was such an artist, whose impression was on every section of the society – be it a deeply understanding audience or a common man who watches films for entertainment. She says that if you ask your family or people around, everyone will say that this man was different. This difference was more in his truth than in his acting. Irrfan neither showed off nor ran after stardom. He gave time to his art, honed it and worked honestly. His journey was not a fluke. He did small roles for years, struggled, faced rejections and proved himself. Therefore, success was not just the result of glamour, but hard work and truth. Shooting despite injury: Irrfan used to run with painkillers. There was a phase during the shooting of ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, which Ranjita is unable to forget even today. Irrfan Khan suffered a serious heel injury in the middle of the film. Usually, shooting is stopped in such situations, but here the story was different. Ranjita tells that she saw that Irfan used to come to the set limping. Many times he had a stick in his hand for support. But as soon as the camera started rolling, he would leave the pain and get into the character. The most challenging thing was that many important scenes of the film, like running sequences and action, were left. Despite this he did not stop shooting. He used to do scenes by taking painkillers and when the pain increased, he used to take a break and return. Ranjita says he never said that I will not be able to do it or will do it later. His commitment became an inspiration for the team. This dedication makes ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ real and effective. For Ranjita Kaur, a great artist who finds happiness in small things, one aspect of Irrfan Khan was special – his child-like nature. She says that Irrfan was as great an artist as he was a simple person. His behavior on the set did not seem like a star. He used to talk to everyone – be it technician, lightman or junior artist. There was an ease in him, which made the atmosphere light and pleasant. Ranjita recalls that his sense of humor was endearing. He would joke about small things and the set would be filled with laughter. He took interest in everything – books, conversations or small incidents. For him, happiness was not in big things, but in everyday moments. Working with him was more of an emotional connection than a professional experience. The art of getting immersed in the character: Irrfan’s unique process Ranjita tells that Irrfan Khan’s acting process was very internal. She couldn’t fully explain it in words, but she could feel it. According to him, Irrfan used to capture the truth of the character. They didn’t put themselves into it until they felt they understood it. But once he reached that level, the character became a part of him. Ranjitha noticed that even after the shoot was over, he did not completely come out of character. That layer remained in place even while talking and walking. Its effect was visible in his performance. He didn’t seem to be acting. It seemed as if he was the same person whose story was being shown on screen. His biggest strength was to connect with the truth and convey it to the audience. Restless curiosity to know everything: Irrfan’s ‘learning mode’ was always on. Ranjeeta Kaur tells that one of the special things about Irrfan Khan was his immense curiosity. He was not limited to just the character, but tried to understand every small and big thing. While shooting in Dholpur, the team came to know about a nearby Dargah. Ranjita went there and told Irfan. As soon as I mentioned it, Irfan became curious – “Whose Dargah is it? What is special there?” He did not listen formally, but understood everything with interest. When Ranjita showed the pictures, he kept looking carefully and asking questions. He had the same curiosity about books also. Once the character of the novel was mentioned in the conversation, Irfan started talking about it as if he was living it. According to Ranjita, Irfan’s hunger to learn kept making him better. This was the reason why he was able to add new depth to every character. ‘I don’t handle rejection’ – Irrfan’s different perspective When Ranjeeta asked Irrfan Khan how he handled rejection in his career, his answer was – “I don’t handle rejection.” At first glance this answer seems shocking, but according to Ranjita there was a deep thought behind it. Irfan meant that he did not let rejection become his identity. He faced rejection many times in his career, but did not let it affect his heart. He remained engaged in his work, kept learning and moving forward. For him, failure was not a stoppage, but part of the process. He accepted it, but did not get involved in it. According to Ranjita, this thinking made her different. While many people get devastated by rejection, Irrfan ignored it and continued on his path. Irrfan playing with a goat kid: Ranjita Kaur has an innocent and beautiful anecdote related to Irrfan Khan, which shows the true face of his personality. She tells that during the shooting in the village, she saw that Irrfan was playing with a baby goat. This was not a public moment, nor was it for the cameras. It was completely natural. He became attached to that small animal like a child plays. He used to mingle easily with the children around him. Ranjita says that seeing this made her realize how much Irfan loved life. He never ignored anything – be it a human being, an animal or even a small moment. Every experience mattered to him. Therefore, his life was not limited to just work, but he had an attitude of finding happiness in every small thing. This simplicity and sensitivity made him a great human being. ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ and Irrfan’s only National Award Ranjeeta says that for a long time she felt that Irrfan Khan had received many National Awards. But later it was revealed that his first and only National Award was for Paan Singh Tomar. When this was confirmed, there was silence for a moment. According to him, this realization brought two emotions – on one hand, pride that this film got the honor, and on the other hand, regret that such a great artiste should have received more awards. Ranjita believes that Irrfan’s work did not deserve awards, but it hurts that his talent was not respected as much as it should have been. Nevertheless, this honor of Paan Singh Tomar became an important part of his legacy. Deep friendship and trust with Tigmanshu Dhulia According to Ranjeeta, the relationship between Irrfan Khan and Tigmanshu Dhulia was not just that of director-actor. It was based on deep friendship and understanding. She says that there was a special coordination between the two on the set. They understood each other without many words. Their connection was clearly visible even in work and personal moments. Many times it seemed that both shared the same thoughts. This was the reason why Paan Singh Tomar could be made with such authenticity. Ranjita says that this relationship was special. Such a connection is not made with everyone. This was not just a professional coordination, but an example of deep friendship. The passion to always keep learning: Irrfan’s real legacy Ranjeeta Kaur finally says that the biggest legacy of Irrfan Khan is his hunger to learn. He questioned himself, tried to do better and was never satisfied. The learning button was always on within him. The same thing is visible in his films. Every character was different and deeper than the last. Ranjita believes that her life and work teach only one lesson – if you truly believe in something, then keep doing it honestly and do not give up. The same thinking was also there in Paan Singh Tomar’s journey and his documentary. Irrfan ji’s wife Sutapa ji has seen it, and it is special for her because she saw it recently. Babil and Ion haven’t seen it yet, so we’re still waiting for them to see it. __________________________________________________________ Also read this Bollywood news..
