The government of US President Donald Trump has taken a major step to curb Iran’s oil exports. On Friday, the US Treasury Department imposed economic sanctions on China-based major oil refinery Hengli Petrochemical and about 40 shipping companies and tankers. America says that these sanctions have been imposed on companies involved in the purchase and transportation of Iranian oil, which are part of the Trump administration’s maximum pressure strategy. Its purpose is to completely stop Iran’s main source of income – oil exports.
Hengli Petrochemical’s refinery located in Dalian city of China has also come under the scanner of these sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. It is one of the largest independent refineries in China, with the capacity to process 4 lakh barrels of crude oil daily.
The Treasury Department says that Hengli has been receiving shipments of Iranian oil since 2023. A group called ‘United Against Nuclear Iran’ had also earlier described Hengli as one of the major buyers of Iranian oil.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant made it clear that his department would completely shut down the network of middlemen and buyers on which Iran depends. Besant had written a letter to financial institutions of China, Hong Kong, UAE and Oman earlier this month warning them. He said that if Iranian money is in the banks of these countries or they are buying Iranian oil, then America is fully prepared to impose ‘secondary sanctions’.
Due to the ongoing tension with Iran and war-like situation in the Persian Gulf, there has been a huge surge in global oil and natural gas prices. To reduce the impact of this crisis, the Treasury Department has given a temporary exemption on Russian oil.
Apart from this, a one-time special exemption has also been issued for Iranian oil already present in the sea. However, America’s main objective is to completely stop Iran’s illegal financial flows.
