New Delhi: US President Donald Trump on Thursday described India as a “great country”, a comment that drew attention as he re-shared a social media post with anti-immigration rhetoric referring to India and China as “hellholes”.“Clarified by the US Embassy in New Delhi, spokesperson Christopher Elam confirmed the MAGA supremo’s positive comments.“India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top,” the spokesperson quoted Trump as saying, according to IANS.Meanwhile, India also reacted to Trump’s “hell-hole” post as MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen some reports. That’s where I leave it.”The US response came in response to a post on Truth Social by Trump, who has referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great friend” on multiple occasions.The controversial post, which criticized immigration to the United States and referred to countries including India and China in derogatory terms, sparked political criticism. “Here a child becomes a citizen instantly, and then they bring the whole family from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet. You don’t have to go far to see that. English is no longer spoken here. That the immigrant class that comes today has almost no loyalty to this country, which was not always the case,” it read.It alleged systemic bias in the employment and immigration system: “You have to be from India or China because almost all internal processes are set up to be run by Indians and Chinese.” The post also claims that the integration seen in previous waves of European immigration is “long overdue,” arguing that the United States has shifted from a “melting pot” to a “pot of cash.”
