
Indian ArmyFor its minefield breaching capability, the defense ministry on Tuesday signed a contract worth around Rs 975 crore to procure critical equipment for the T-72 and T-90 tanks.
Contracts with defense PSU Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Private Ltd for procurement of TRAWL assemblies for T-72/T-90 tanks. The agreement was signed in the presence of Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The TRAWL assembly for T-72/T-90 tanks is an important piece of equipment developed by DRDO that will create additional capability to create vehicle safe lanes through proximity magnetically fused minefields with anti-tank mines, thereby enhancing the Army’s operational effectiveness, a ministry statement said.
Being a ‘Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ case, the purchase marks a significant step towards modernization of India’s defense infrastructure and empowerment of indigenous industries. The statement added, “The project has immense potential to generate direct and indirect employment by encouraging the MSME sector through components manufacturing”.
