‘Political demonetisation’: Tharoor slams Centre for linking women’s reservation with delimitation | India News
New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor Criticizing the government for linking women’s reservation with restrictions, Thursday said the law should be implemented immediately without being tied to the border process. He called for a detailed and comprehensive discussion without haste in a short period of time.Speaking to reporters outside the Sangsad Bhavan complex, Tharoor said the opposition fully supports women’s reservation but questioned the need to link it with restrictions.“I just want to say that we have no problem with reservation of women, they (the government) can do it immediately, but why are restrictions being included, that is our question, because there are many issues related to boundaries, a long discussion is needed, but they want to finish in 2-3 days, it is not possible,” he said.He asserted that the government could immediately go ahead with reservation if it deviated from the restrictions.“If the government wants this women’s reservation, they could have done it in 2023, they should do it now, we will support — no restrictions, just the women’s reservation bill,” Tharoor said. The comments came after the introduction of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill to amend the Women’s Quota Act in the Lok Sabha following a split vote. Apart from this, two general bills – Limitation Bill and Union Territories Act (Amendment) Bill – were also introduced to implement the proposed amended Women’s Quota Act in the Union Territories of Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir. The MP from Thiruvananthapuram also pointed to the concerns of southern states and termed the process as “political demonetisation”.“The way you’re restricting — the way you scrap notes without thinking. We do not want this political demonetisation. There should be a big debate; What should be the formula, cannot be population based only. Talk to the south, northeast, small states,” he said.He reiterated that demarcation required detailed discussion, even as he supported the immediate implementation of women’s reservation.“There needs to be a detailed discussion on restrictions but right now, there should be immediate implementation of women’s reservation. We will support it immediately,” he said.
