New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday will address prominent figures from various sectors and women achievers as he steps up his direct outreach to the public to build support for a bill proposed to implement women’s quotas in the legislature from 2029, amid critical voices from the opposition, particularly on possible restrictive practices. An official statement described the program as “Nari Shakti Bandan Sammelan”, similar to the Women’s Quota Act passed in 2023 named ‘Nari Shakti Bandan Adhiniyam’. The bills, which Parliament is expected to take up during a special session on April 16, propose to fix the implementation of the law providing for the reservation of one-third seats for women in the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies from the 2029 national elections. “The program will witness the participation of eminent personalities and women achievers from various fields. It will bring together representatives from various sectors like government, academia, science, sports, entrepreneurship, media, social work and culture,” the statement said. With a united opposition in a position to deny the government the two-thirds majority needed to pass the constitutional amendment bill, particularly in the Lok Sabha, Modi has turned to rallying public support to raise political costs for his rivals if they oppose the move. She also spoke about the Women Quota Bill in her recent political rally.
