The monument to the revered 19th-century spiritual leader is in downtown Seattle, a public space visited by about 400,000 people daily. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and Consul General of India in San Francisco Prakash Gupta jointly unveiled the statue. The event saw participation from a wide cross-section of elected representatives and community members, including the mayors of Kent, Auburn, Tukwila, Normandy Park and Kirkland and city council members from Bellevue, Bothell, DuPont and Redmond. Members of the local Indian-American diaspora also turned out in large numbers to witness what officials described as a “historic and first-of-its-kind initiative”.
Seattle’s Inclusive Spirit and India’s Relationship
Mayor Wilson highlighted that the installation reflects Seattle’s “inclusive spirit” and underlines its commitment to cultural diversity and global partnerships. He emphasized the significance of placing Swami Vivekananda’s statue in one of the most vibrant and innovative regions of the United States, a hub known globally for its connected technology and innovation ecosystem.The spot includes landmarks such as the Amazon headquarters, the Seattle Convention Center, and the Seattle Center Monorail.
Gift from ICCR strengthens cultural diplomacy
The statue was gifted to the city of Seattle by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), marking an important milestone in the expansion of India’s cultural diplomacy. Officials said the gesture recognizes Seattle’s multicultural character and aligns with ICCR’s larger efforts to promote people-to-people connectivity between India and the US.The unveiling coincides with ICCR Day celebrations, emphasizing the organization’s mission to use arts and culture as a bridge across the continent.
Vivekananda’s global legacy lives on
Swami Vivekananda, who introduced the philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world more than a century ago, continues to influence generations worldwide. The installation in Seattle adds to a growing number of international commemorations honoring his legacy and philosophy, particularly in cities that host vibrant Indian diaspora communities.
The artist behind the statue
The bronze monument was created by renowned Indian sculptor Naresh Kumar Kumawat, whose artistic portfolio includes more than 600 installations in more than 80 countries. Kumawat’s works, recognized for capturing India’s cultural depth and spiritual traditions, serve as visual expressions of the nation’s heritage across the global landscape.
