Congress spokesperson Vedabrat Bora told PTI that Daimari announced his decision before the media and is yet to submit his resignation letter to the party.
Earlier in the day, Daimari told reporters that he had resigned from Congress and “surrendered” his candidacy. “Congress is of no use. It has betrayed me,” he said.
“The Congress works only for the Miads, but they do nothing for Scheduled Tribes like me,” complains Daimari.
He claimed that after nominating him from Udalguri seat, the Congress did not extend any support to the campaign.
“I have repeatedly called the party leadership, but they did not even pick up my calls. I am hurt that they did not help me. The district congress committee did not help me,” Daimari said.
He also said that he has decided to leave the party as he did not get a response even after waiting for a long time.
When asked why he resigned a day before the polls, Daimari said, “I did not betray the party, the party betrayed me.”
In the situation that arose after Daimari’s announcement, the senior election panel official clarified that the deadline for withdrawal of nominations has been extended and the names of the candidates have already been loaded into the EVMs.
He further said, “Actually, the polling parties have left for their polling booths. So there is no question of withdrawing anyone from the contest now.”
Polling for the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly will be held on April 9, and the results will be announced on May 4. Four candidates are contesting for Udalguri Assembly seat
Apart from Daimari, BJP ally Rihan Daimari of BPF, Dipen Boro of UPPL and Younik Basumatari of Voters Party International are contesting from this seat.
