'Not denying any property in Dubai?': Pawan Khera steps up attack on wife Himanta over foreign assets

New Delhi: Congress leader Pawan Khera raised a series of questions directed at the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma And his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, has sought clarity on the disclosures made in the official affidavit.Khera also said that he would present more evidence in the coming days as the debate intensified ahead of the state assembly elections.While talking to reporters, he also questioned why the Assam chief minister had kept the details of foreign assets belonging to his wife hidden in the official release.“Are they denying that they have no property in Dubai? Are they denying that they have no company in America? Are they denying that they have no shell company anywhere in the world? We will provide more evidence every day. Many are coming. Why did he hide the Dubai property owned by his wife from his election affidavit? He saidThe comments came amid a political spat that has turned into a war of words, with Himanta announcing legal action against the Congress leader.

Sarma rejected the allegations, announcing a defamation case

Responding to the allegations, Himanta Biswa Sharma on Sunday dismissed all the allegations as ‘malicious’ and ‘politically motivated’ and said that both he and his wife would initiate legal proceedings.In a post on X, he wrote: “I categorically reject every allegation made by him. They are malicious, fabricated and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam.”He added: “My wife and I will file a criminal and civil defamation case against Mr. Pawan Khera within the next 48 hours. He will be held fully accountable for his reckless and defamatory statements.”Expressing faith in the legal process, Sarma said: “I have full faith in the judicial system. Once the truth is established in a court of law, Shri Pawan Khera will face the consequences of his actions and the law will take its due course.”

Khera’s complaint and demand for investigation

During his press conference, Khera raised several allegations, including claims related to holding foreign properties, shell companies and passports linked to the chief minister’s family.He questioned: “What is the need for Himant Vishwasharma’s wife to have 3 passports? Are you some kind of criminal? Does Himant himself have such a passport somewhere? Is this a preparation – to run away after losing the election?”He also alleged financial links with shell companies abroad, saying: “Himant Biswa Sharma kept his money in shell companies established in Wyoming. Why Wyoming? Because there is no tax here… it is a well-known place where people’s property is hidden.”Calling for a probe, Khera asked: “When will Amit Shah form an SIT to probe? When will CEC take cognizance of the withholding of information in Gyanesh Kumar’s affidavit?”He also claimed: “Himant’s wife Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma has a company in Wyoming, USA. The members of this company include Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma, Himant Vishwa Sharma and their sons.”The controversy erupted after Khera alleged that Rinikki Bhuiyan Sharma held multiple foreign passports and had business and property links abroad, including in Dubai and the United States.Sarma, however, rejected the claims and pointed to ‘serious inconsistencies’ in the documents cited by Khera, suggesting possible fabrication or tampering. He maintained that the allegations were part of a politically motivated campaign ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
