KOLKATA: The mother of a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital in 2024 has sparked a fierce political debate as a BJP candidate after the release of an alleged campaign video in which she is heard threatening to throw down the Bengal chief minister. He alleged that Nirmal’s son and his TMC rival Tirthankar were fielded “to cover up the crime”.TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, terming the comments a “serious threat to democratic values and public dignity” and warned that they risked spoiling the electoral environment. The party demanded swift legal and punitive action.The BJP has not responded to the controversy. The candidate’s husband said they were not aware of any formal complaints and described the comments as being made in a “moment of intense anger”.
