EC orders NIA probe into Maldah gherao of judicial officers after Supreme Court directive | India News
New Delhi: The Election Commission gave this order on Thursday evening National Investigation Agency (NIA) to investigate the encirclement of seven judicial officers appointed to hear appeals against deletion from the final list of West Bengal by some “anti-social elements” in Maldah district of the state. This came hours after the Supreme Court directed the EC to hand over the probe/investigation into the incident to an independent agency, such as the Central Bureau of Investigation or the National Investigation Agency, “within the course of days”.The EC asked the NIA to submit the preliminary investigation report directly to this court as directed by the court. The Supreme Court on Thursday also came down heavily on the “total failure of the West Bengal civil and police administration” to prevent and respond to the hostage-taking of seven judicial officers, describing it as a “calculated” attempt to hurt the judiciary and challenge the apex court’s authority. It directed the state Chief Secretary, DGP and District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Malda to show cause why appropriate action should not be taken against them in light of the information shared by the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.
