Maharashtra: Father arrested as 10-year-old dies after being hung upside down overnight | India News

A 10-year-old girl died in Maharashtra’s Sangli district after her father hung her upside down in their home and held her overnight, police said on Friday. The man allegedly tortured the child on suspicion of stealing money from a relative.Accused farmer Dadu alias Nana Yamgar has been arrested. Police said he also subjected the girl’s 11-year-old sister to similar abuse. The older sister is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital.The incident came to light on Thursday when doctors informed the Atpadi taluk police about the death of the girl, identified as Rutuja.Other family members, including Yamgar’s father, intervened and tried to rescue the girls, but he allegedly threatened them with a machete, police said. As a result both girls hang upside down throughout the night. Police added that even Rutuza’s repeated requests for water did not move him.“Yamgar hanged his two daughters – Rutuja and Anuja – upside down by tying their hands and feet to an iron corner fixed under the roof of their house. He was enraged as he suspected that both the girls had stolen money from a relative’s house in Atpari’s Banpuri,” a police official was quoted as saying by PTI.Police said both the girls were found unconscious in the morning and family members brought them down. The sisters were then taken to a government hospital, but Rutuza’s condition deteriorated.He died while being taken to a hospital in Pandharpur in Solapur district, police said. Her elder sister Anuja is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.The matter came to light after the hospital authorities alerted the police, after which the girl’s father was taken into custody. Police said the accused is suspected to be mentally unstable.A case has been registered against Yamgar under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) and further investigation is underway.
