New Delhi: Multiple snowfall Seven people were killed and five injured when it hit the Srinagar-Leh national highway on Friday, officials said.An avalanche hit between Zero Point and Minimarg in the afternoon and several vehicles were trapped under the snow and debris, they said.Officials said rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the spot and rescue operations have been launched. Efforts are underway to clear snow and locate and rescue people trapped in affected areas.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh Confirming the death of seven people
In a post on X, Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed that seven people died in the incident.“Saddened to learn of the tragic death of 7 people and 5 injuries in an avalanche at Zojila Pass. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. All necessary assistance is being extended to the injured,” Singh said in a post on X.
Ladakh LG said relief and rescue operations are underway
Ladakh Lt. Governor Binai Kumar Saxena said he has directed Kargil’s Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police to reach the spot and oversee the relief and rescue operations.In a post on X, he said, “…I have directed the DC and SSP of Kargil to visit the spot immediately and carry out relief and rescue operations. All government agencies, including disaster relief forces and BROs, have been put on high alert. I am personally monitoring the situation.”
