Watch: Massive ruckus in J&K Assembly as NC MLAs protest over killing of Iran’s Ali Khamenei | India News
New Delhi: A major clash broke out in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Friday as National Conference (NC) legislators protested against the assassination of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and the ongoing US-Israeli military action in Iran.Video footage from the assembly shows NC legislators chanting slogans and holding portraits of Khamenei inside the House. The police later came to restore order as tensions rose between the members. BJP MLAs retaliated against the protest, leading to a scuffle between Congress MLA Irfan Hafeez Lone and BJP MLA Yudvir Shetty. Parliament was temporarily adjourned to calm the situation. The protests were led by NC leaders who expressed solidarity with Iran. Party MLA Tanveer Sadiq said, “We stand in solidarity with Iran. The entire National Conference and the Jammu and Kashmir government stand by them. No country has the right to attack another, and India’s top leadership should condemn it.” Sadiq stressed that the party supports the people of Iran in light of Khamenei’s assassination.Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the ongoing conflict in West Asia, stressing that regime change cannot be achieved through military bombardment. “The only people who can choose their regime are the citizens of that country. Regimes cannot be changed through airstrikes,” Abdullah said. He called Khamenei’s assassination a “gross abuse of power and a violation of international law.”Tensions in the region rose after a joint US-Israeli military strike on Iran on February 28, which killed Khamenei and several senior leaders of the Islamic Republic. In retaliation, Iran attacked US bases in the Gulf states and Israel.
