New Delhi: Defense Minister stressed the need for strong infrastructure along the border Rajnath Singh The Border Roads Organization (BRO) on Wednesday said it has been entrusted with infrastructure development along the nearly 1,600-km India-Myanmar border, an initiative that will further strengthen its border management capabilities.Rajnath, who chaired a meeting of a Parliamentary Advisory Committee to the Ministry of Defense at BRO here on Wednesday, emphasized that through this network, all-weather connectivity is being ensured even in remote and high-altitude areas, thereby enhancing operational mobility and defense readiness. Progress under the Border Roads Development Program 2023-28, under which more than 1,000 roads and infrastructure projects including new construction, upgradation and maintenance works are being executed to strengthen border connectivity, was also discussed in the meeting.
The Minister also appreciated the efforts of the BRO to enhance connectivity in the Northeast and areas affected by left-wing extremism, thereby contributing to security and regional development. “The BRO facilitated the mobilization of the Defense Forces, and worked to bring about a positive change in the lives of the residents,” he said. Insightful discussions were held on defence, infrastructure development and ongoing strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening national security and operational readiness.Drawing the attention of members of the Parliamentary Advisory Committee to the important aspect of ‘use of technology’, the Minister said, the BRO is fast adopting modern construction techniques by making best use of technologies like high rise machinery, modular bridges and precast technology.“BRO has improved both the quality and speed of its work. This proves that we are building future-ready infrastructure,” he said. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthen the BRO in terms of budgetary support, modern equipment and initiatives aimed at the welfare of their staff. The BRO, established in 1960, has constructed more than 64,000 km of roads, 1,179 bridges, 22 airfields and seven tunnels, significantly enhancing operational readiness and socio-economic development in border areas.
