Kerala youth stranded in Iranian cargo ship, relatives seek help

KOLLAM: A sea trainee from Chandanathope in Kerala’s Kollam has been stranded in an Iranian cargo ship in mid-sea off the Sharjah coast for almost a month. His family is worried about his suffering. Akhimon M, 21, joined the Iran-based cargo ship Queen Star and traveled to the country on April 14 last year. After completing his training at the International Maritime Academy in Chennai, he was recruited through a Jaipur-based recruitment agency. Her mother Ramiha Madhu told TOI that the family last spoke to her four days ago. “They are not giving my son proper food or salary. He said he is struggling. He is our only son and we are helpless,” she said. The family contacted the ship’s owner and sought the intervention of Kollam MP, NK Premachandran. The MP told TOI: “I have taken up the matter with the Indian embassy in Iran… It is difficult to say when he will be able to return but he is said to be safe.”
