The MP is seeking a law to suspend judges on serious charges

NEW DELHI: DMK Rajya Sabha MPs have demanded the government to bring in a law with provision for suspension of judges facing serious charges with strong evidence while highlighting impeachment is a complex process.Speaking at Zero Hour on Thursday, Wilson said, “We must legislate for a system to suspend judges facing serious charges without compromising the independence of the judiciary, to maintain public confidence in the judiciary. Impeachment is a long drawn out and very complex process.”The demand comes at a time when the impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Verma are pending in the Lok Sabha.Wilson also pointed out that in the last five years, out of 593 judges appointed to the high court, 473 judges – about 80% – belong to the pioneer community. “Even today the Supreme Court has only one woman judge, two judges belonging to religious minorities, one judge from scheduled caste and no judge from scheduled tribe. There is a need for broad social representation for the judiciary to reflect the diversity of our society,” he added.
