New Delhi: US has weakened international organizations and multilateralism is under threat, former German chancellor Angela Markle Dr. Manmohan Singh said this while delivering the inaugural address. Referring to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, he said the principle of territorial integrity in Europe had been violated, putting the European order “into a corner”.“Territorial integrity and the right to sovereignty were trampled upon. Multilateralism as our concept of cooperation is under pressure,” he said, adding that the world order had been shaken. “The United States under Trump has weakened international organizations such as the WHO, the World Trade Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement. They even question the role of the United Nations or replace it with unilateral action. The previous order of cooperation is being replaced by one that can make sense,” said Merkel, who served as Germany’s chancellor for 16 years.The former chancellor made a strong pitch for multilateral cooperation, saying giving up was not an option at a time of rising protectionism.
