The family has demanded a judicial inquiry, calling it a fake encounter, while the police are justifying their operation. According to the information, Ranjit Singh, who was the only son of his family, was allegedly picked up from his house at around 4 pm. Later, the police said that he was killed in an encounter in a case related to the murder of two Punjab policemen at Adhiyan check post in Dorangala sector of Gurdaspur.
Allegation of killing in encounter
Ranjeet’s mother Sukhwinder Kaur and other family members have come forward and made serious allegations. He says that Ranjeet was falsely implicated, abducted from his home illegally and later killed in a fake encounter. The family has demanded presentation of evidence in the entire case, justice and strict action against the responsible officials.
Ranjit’s uncle alleged that the CCTV cameras of the village were removed a day before the encounter and the villagers were instructed not to go to the area where the encounter took place. He raised the question, ‘Even if there was any involvement, would the police shoot straight away? We need proof.
In this case, Shiromani Akali Dal has also raised serious questions on convicting someone without trial and has demanded a CBI investigation to ensure impartiality.
What do the police say?
Police say that while taking action after the murder of two policemen, three youths were arrested and one accused was killed in the encounter. The police have also claimed that the murder of the policemen was done at the behest of ISI for Rs 20,000, of which Rs 3,000 was given as advance. However, the police have not given a clear answer to the CCTV questions related to the movement of five people on a bike that same night.
here Punjab The government is already facing legal challenges over alleged fake encounter cases. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had in November sought a reply from the Punjab Home Department on this issue within two weeks, which is said to be still pending.
Complainant and advocate Nikhil Saraf said, ‘Around 40 encounters have taken place since November. Who is examining their evidence? The same story emerges every time. The biggest question is why the Human Rights Commission has not been replied to yet and why no action has been taken against any police officer?
The letter sent to NHRC alleges that Punjab Police DGP Gaurav Yadav is allegedly motivating police officers to carry out extra-judicial killings (encounters) as a matter of professional evaluation.
At present the matter has gained momentum. On one hand the family and opposition parties are demanding a fair investigation, while on the other hand the police are calling their operation lawful. Now everyone’s eyes are on what conclusions the investigating agencies draw in this case.
