Court reprimands makers of The Kerala Story-2: Refused to obey pre-screening order, hearing adjourned till 3 pm; Demand to stop the release

The film The Kerala Story 2 is in controversy. A petition was filed against the film’s release on the charge of showing a wrong image of the state. During the hearing of this petition in the Kerala High Court on Wednesday, the makers were ordered to hold a pre-screening for the court, although the makers have clearly refused to do so. During the hearing of the petition, the makers were asked to hold a screening of the film for the court in Kochi before its release on February 27. The hearing of the case has been postponed after the makers did not obey the order. Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas ordered that the hearing will now be held after 3 pm. This petition was also heard on Tuesday. Then senior lawyer S. appeared on behalf of the producers of the film. Sreekumar said that first the court should decide whether these petitions are public interest litigation or private litigation. On this, Justice Bechu Kurien Thomas told the makers, “You do not want the court to watch the film. You only want the court to decide whether this matter is a personal matter of an individual or a public matter involving the entire people.” In the hearing, the court reprimanded the makers and said that Kerala is a state of complete harmony, hence why the image of the state has been shown wrongly in the film. The bench said that the concerns raised by the petitioners appear prima facie valid. It was also said that the film is being said to be ‘inspired by true events’ and the name of the state has been used prominently in its title, even though the film’s story has no actual connection with Kerala. Hearing on three petitions continues: Kerala High Court was hearing three petitions, which were filed by three different people against the film. These petitions demanded a stay on the release of the film and cancellation of the certificate given by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Why is The Kerala Story 2 in controversy?
