Parliamentary panel passes resolution against AI summit protest, opposition MPs dissent | India News
New Delhi: The simmering political tussle over the Youth Congress protest at the Global AI Summit reverberated in a parliamentary committee meeting on Tuesday as it passed a resolution condemning the incident amid dissenting views of MPs from various opposition parties.“The Committee wishes to place on record its appreciation for the successful organization of the India Al Impact Summit by the Ministry of Electronics and IT under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Committee also condemns the unfortunate incident that took place at the venue of the India Al Summit on 20-2-2026,” said Panel Chairperson Duquesne. It was carried by a majority vote, with 10 MPs belonging to the BJP-led alliance voting for it and six including Congress, TMC, SS(UBT) and Samajwadi Party voting against it, sources said. While it is not common for parliamentary committees to take up matters outside their listed agenda, government sources said the rules allow them to express their views on importance, more so as the summit was organized by the IT ministry, overseen by a panel headed by Dube.An opposition MP claimed that they protested because the committee was “indulging in politics” for the protest and noted that even non-Congress party members voted against the motion although some youths like the Samajwadi Party spoke out against shirtless protests by Congress members. The proposal was proposed by BJP MP Amar Pal Maurya. He told TOI, “The resolution was to condemn the incident that tried to tarnish the country’s image and was not against any party. Everyone should have supported it. In fact those who did not do politics.”Those who voted against it included SS(UBT)’s Priyanka Chaturvedi, Samajwadi Party’s Devesh Shakya and TMC’s Saket Gokhale, sources said. The resolution hailed the five-day summit as a “great success”, stressing that 91 countries and leading companies are committed to inclusive al development. The companies have announced investments of over US$200 billion in India, it said, with Google committing to a large data center in India as well as a direct submarine cable between India and the US.
