After the US Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s global tariffs, the European Commission has demanded America to strictly follow the terms of the EU-US trade agreement signed last year. After the court’s decision, Trump announced the implementation of first 10 percent and then 15 percent temporary tariff, which has increased tension regarding trade across the world.
The European Commission, which sets trade policies on behalf of the EU’s 27 member states, has sought clarity from Washington on what its next steps will be. The Commission said that under the previous agreement, a maximum limit of 15 percent was set on most European products, and any tariff hike above this limit would not be acceptable. Additionally, some products such as planes and their spare parts were covered under a completely tariff-free agreement, while some sectors such as steel were subject to separate rules.
The European Commission stressed that volatile and uncertain tariffs undermine confidence in global markets and seriously impact transatlantic trade. Such steps threaten economic stability between the two sides and undermine confidence in the agreements.
EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic discussed the issue with US Trade Representative Jameson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Latnick on Saturday. The Commission again clarified that “a deal is a deal” and both parties should respect mutual consent and rules so that trade relations remain better and transparent.
