New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debvrata Saikia on Sunday dismissed concerns over former state Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying the development would not affect the party’s chances in the upcoming assembly elections.The Congress leader said Borah’s exit would not hurt the Congress as local leaders and workers in his constituency chose to stay back.

“It will not cause any harm because the leaders and workers of his constituency, from where he was preparing to contest for the last three years, have not decided to go with him. They have said that even if he leaves, we will remain in the Congress. So we will not be harmed,” he said.Saikia added, “We are making people aware of those who are doing injustice and working against the constitution.”Borah formally joined the BJP on Sunday in the presence of state BJP president Dilip Saikia and BJP MP Baijayant Panda, months ahead of the Assam assembly elections.Welcoming him to the party, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said Borah will start a new phase in his political career.“Bhupen Kumar Borah has contributed a lot Congress party. He worked in the Congress party for 32 years. He will start a new political journey from today. I extend my best wishes to him,” Sarma said.Borah was associated with the Indian National Congress for over three decades before switching sides ahead of high-stakes state elections.
