Famous musician AR. Following an important decision on Friday, Rahman has agreed before the Supreme Court that the name and contribution of Junior Dagar Brothers, eminent musicians of Dagar tradition, in the song ‘Veera Raja Veera’ from the film ‘Ponniyin Selvan-2’ will be officially added to the credit list of the songs. The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant, reports Hindustan Times. He has directed Rahman and the filmmakers to register this new credit on all social media and OTT platforms within five weeks. The court made it clear that this consent did not mean that other aspects of the main copyright lawsuit would be affected in any way. That case will still continue its process. Rehman’s senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the board that this consent has been given without prejudice and it will not be allowed to affect Rehman’s stand in the official case. The court considered that it is necessary to give recognition and respect to India’s classical music heritage. The Supreme Court also said that the Dagar tradition, called Dagarvani Dhrupad, has been a precious stream of Indian classical music and its contribution is unique. This is why the court advised to modify the credit. Let us tell you that this dispute has been going on since the year 2023, when Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar had claimed that his family’s old Dhrupad composition ‘Shiva Stuti’ has been used without permission in the song ‘Veera Raja Veera’. Dagar alleged that the tempo, rhythm and sentiment of the song matches the original tune, which was recorded earlier by his father Ustad Nasir Fayyazuddin Dagar and uncle Ustad Nasir Zaheeruddin Dagar. Although Rahman and the producers say that their composition is an original and independent musical composition, the Supreme Court has taken this step so that the traditional music world gets due recognition and respect. This decision is being seen as an important example in the matter of copyright and recognition of cultural tradition in the music world.
