'Pan-India problem': SC hits out at freebies, asks parties to reconsider

NEW DELHI: NEW DELHI: In a scathing criticism of governments taking free recourse, the SC on Thursday said that larger disbursements and direct bank transfers of money would encourage laziness that would be detrimental to nation building.A bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justices Jayamalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi said states must invest in good schools, hospitals, training centers and job creation schemes to ensure dignified livelihood. The comments came on a petition by the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation challenging Rule 23 of the Electricity (Amendment) Act, 2024, which imposes financial discipline on discoms and can block the Tamil Nadu government’s free or subsidized power projects. The CJI said, “This is a pan-India problem, and we are not referring to TN alone. It is time that political stalwarts, leaders and political parties, irrespective of their ideology, revisit such freebie schemes with social workers.
