According to news agency PTI, Perarivalan said, “My focus will be on providing legal aid to prisoners who often do not have access to effective representation.”

Madras High Court Chief Justice Sushruta Arvind Dharmadhikari was present at the nomination ceremony of Perarivalan. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Bar Council Chairman P.S. Amalraj and Vice President S. Prabhakaran also attended the function. Advocate C.K. Chandrashekhar moved the nomination proposal, while nomination committee chairman K. Balu administered the oath.

Perarivalan remained in jail for 31 years

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) kept Perarivalan in custody and did not even allow his mother to meet him.

Perarivalan was accused of purchasing and supplying a nine-volt battery, which was used in the bomb blast that killed Rajiv Gandhi. As evidence of this allegation, a shopkeeper had testified that Perarivalan had purchased the battery from his shop. This case was registered under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (TADA).

Supreme Court On May 18, 2022, using powers under Article 142, it ordered the release of Perarivalan, who had spent 31 years in jail in a murder case.
