According to this latest report of the official digital database ‘UDISE+ 2025-26’, there has been a huge and continuous decline in the number of students dropping out at various levels in Indian schools.

Along with this, this is the first time in the history of the country when the total number of teachers in schools across the country has crossed 1.02 crore. According to the report of the Ministry of Education, there has been a significant reduction in the dropout rate in the academic year 2025-26 compared to the previous three years (2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25). Preparatory Level- Here the graph of children dropping out of school has come down from 2.3 percent in the year 2024-25 to 1.8 percent now.
Secondary level- The biggest improvement has been seen here, where the dropout rate has come down directly from 8.2 percent to 7.0 percent.

The report said that this decline shows that schools are now becoming more accessible, helpful and sensitive to the needs of children. According to the report, children are now completing their studies for a long time after enrolling in school. In this, the retention rate of middle level children in school has increased from 82.8% to 83.7%. There has been a huge jump in the secondary level. This rate has increased from 47.2% last year to 51.9% this year.

The government says that the increase in the number of secondary level schools has made it easier for children to reach school, due to which this improvement has been seen. However, a slight decline has also been recorded at the foundational and preparatory level.

Teachers crossed 1 crore for the first time
Touching a new milestone in the history of Indian education, the total number of school teachers in the country has crossed 1.02 crore. According to the report, a huge increase of 8.3 percent has been seen in the number of teachers this year compared to the year 2022-23. This step will prove to be a game changer in improving the student-teacher ratio and quality of education in the country. Along with this, the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) at the secondary level has also improved from 68.5% in the year 2024-25 to 71.7% in 2025-26.

What is UDISE+ report?
Let us tell you that UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) is the official digital database of the Government of India. It is run by the Ministry of Education, which collects real-time data on school infrastructure, student enrollment and teachers across the country. This latest report has been prepared on the basis of online data uploaded voluntarily by schools till March 31, 2026.
