An NCA spokesperson said, after intercepting a ship of the Russian Shadow Fleet on the morning of June 14, National Crime Agency officers have arrested a 38-year-old Indian national on suspicion of violating sanctions under Russia-related regulations.
NCA said that 24 Indian and Georgian crew members are still present on the tanker and they are cooperating in the investigation. This ship is standing near the Dorset coast under the supervision of British authorities.
Footage released by the UK Defense Ministry shows Royal Marine Commandos landing on the tanker from a Chinook helicopter in the dark and then conducting a search operation with NCA officers.
The tanker, flying under the Cameroonian flag, had left Russia’s Ust-Luga port near St. Petersburg on June 5 and was reportedly headed towards Egypt’s Port Said. According to maritime tracking data, the UK banned the ship in July 2025 and it has since changed both its name and registration flag in an attempt to avoid the sanctions.
The UK government describes Russia’s shadow fleet as a network of hundreds of old tankers that are used to transport banned Russian oil while disguising ownership and origin in various ways.
Prime Minister Starmer called this operation an important step. Defense Minister Dan Jarvis also praised the operation and said that Russia was relying heavily on its ‘shadow fleet’ to raise money for the war.
