‘मैं वापस आऊंगा’ रिव्यू: इम्तियाज अली की बेस्ट लव स्टोरी में बंटवारा है ट्रेजेडी, एक्टिंग की मास्टरक्लास है फिल्म – main vaapas aaunga imtiaz ali weaves india pak partition magical love story career best tmovk
When the emotions of the story hit the heart like a wrath, there is no scope for escape. When it no longer matters how firmly you are a person who sticks to the axis of your emotions. When indescribable emotions start surging in those corners of the heart, which you were not even aware existed till now – then believe that you have encountered a wonderful love story. And Imtiaz’s ‘I will be back’ is the same love story.
A love story divided by a line
Naseeruddin Shah He plays the role of an elderly Sardar who came to Punjab during the partition. Even today, his house and land, which was in Sargodha, is stuck in his heart like a trap. Sargodha, which became part of Pakistan in 1947. When his health deteriorates, Sardar ji starts remembering his first love. His nickname used to be Keanu. Young Keanu (Vedang Raina) was in love with his college student Jiya (Sharvari). Remembering his love, Sardar ji is standing very close to death but is unable to exhale.
Sardarji’s grandson Nirvair (Diljit Dosanjh) is a confused boy who is afraid of commitment in his relationship with his girlfriend (Banita Sandhu). He has a big job abroad but to fulfill his lack of passion, he keeps trying his hand in stand-up comedy. After hearing the news of his grandfather, he returns and becomes our point of view in the story.
Sardar ji has started talking strange things – There is a match on the moon. People of Mars have started capturing the moon. Hitler was also from Mars, the Great Wall of China is visible from the Moon. but spill further
When Nirvair starts to understand and analyze Sardarji’s words, he realizes how big and accurate symbols these moon, Mars and fire are. He understands that grandfather’s life is at stake for some incomplete work, to complete which he wants to go to Sargodha. This work is related to the love story of Keanu and Jiya. The partition of India and Pakistan became a tragedy in this love story.
Nirvair has set out to sort out his grandfather’s issues and find out what happened to his family during the partition. He has to untie the knot in which Sardar ji’s last breath is tied, so that after living ‘such a long and bad’ life, at least he can leave this world peacefully. Will Nirvair, who chokes in the name of commitment, be able to open that knot? Will the trap of Keanu and Jiya’s love story be solved? This only ‘i will come back‘ is the story of.
Not one but two love stories
Imtiaz Ali There is not one, but two love stories in the film – along with Keanu and Jiya, there is also a love story of Sardar ji and Sargodha. The tragedy in both stories is the same – partition.
When Keanu was crazy in love, at the same time people were crazy in hatred of partition. ‘I will be back’ shows you the side of partition that an entire generation of Punjab personally suffered. And nothing is more universal than the personal. Imtiaz’s film does not portray Partition in its political and religious colours, which we have seen a lot in such stories. There is no visible villain in this story. The villain of ‘I will be back’ is partition and this is something that is far beyond the reach of the hero or characters of the story.
In one of his stand-up acts, Nirvair narrates the story of the Radcliffe Line that divided India into two parts. How a man sitting in a bungalow in Delhi had drawn a line dividing a country into two parts in 5 weeks. In Keanu and Jiah’s love story, you see the riots caused by the hint of partition, before the lines were drawn.
But while showing such a big tragedy, Imtiaz does not focus on reconciling the divide. Their focus remains on the love story because the real impact of partition lies there, on the hearts. His focus remains on those who have lived this partition first hand. In one scene, Nirvair is saying angrily to his grandfather’s younger brother, ‘Why are you stuck there?’ The answer is ‘How will you understand?’ Were you there?’ But won’t the poison that those people drank have any effect on their next generations? This sequence is the essence of ‘I will be back’.
Even the wind of this partition did not touch my grandparents sitting in Purvanchal. They only got news about it. It is very easy for me and my family members today to raise this question to anyone that what is it that you are stuck with in Pakistan which has become a scourge for India that you cannot remember?
But this question cannot be asked of Keanu’s family whose men had fled to Amritsar, leaving the women of their house under the protection of their neighbor from Sargodha. Thinking that they would make some arrangements here and bring them after the fire cools down. But that fire swallowed everything. What happened to those women will shatter your heart after seeing it on screen. The effect of that trauma is that an uncle has been standing at Amritsar station every day for 18 years at the time of the train coming from Pakistan.
And how would Keanu and Jiah’s love story have been amidst this fire? That young Sardar had promised his girlfriend to come back. At the age of 95, that Sardar ji is about to die, but is not able to die because the promise is unfulfilled. No one else has shown the yearning of incomplete love that Imtiaz has shown in ‘I will be back’.
The choice of writing made the film great
It will be a credit to the writing of Imtiaz Ali and Nayanika Mehtani that they have woven the pain of partition into a love story in such a way that both the things in the film create a flood of emotions. This writing has amazing control over its plot and narrative. It is very easy to bring out hatred in the stories of partition and to make someone a villain in a love story. But ‘I’ll Be Back’ chooses the difficult path.
You are watching the biggest tragedy of our country, but you will not find a speck of hatred anywhere. In the madness of the riots, you will see the brutality of humans, not of religion or politics. This one writing choice has made ‘I will be back’ a great love story. Besides, it will also be counted among the best films made on Partition. There are a lot of characters in the story, but the arc of everyone’s story is complete. Everyone’s stories get closure.
You must have smiled and felt happy many times when the love story of young heroes in films got closure. But you will find yourself praying in the theater for closure to the incomplete love story of a 95-year-old man. And after the entire movie is over, don’t forget to watch Diljit’s song ‘Kya Kamaal Hai’ at the end. This song is the most amazing work of genius Imtiaz.
‘I’ll Be Back’ is a masterclass in acting
Watching Naseeruddin Shah in the role of Sardarji is like sitting in an acting masterclass. In the role of a 95 year old man, he did not have to work too much with his body, because this character is on the bed. So he has made his face a canvas to capture every beat of emotion. If he does not get the National Award for ‘I will be back’ then it would seem that there is something wrong in this world.
Vedang Raina, who is portraying the youth of this character, is an actor only two films old. But the way he has brought alive the role of a young-shy-poet temperamental Sardar, it goes straight to your heart. Sharvari is excellent in the role of his love interest, the well-mannered-bubbly-evil-brave Jiya. ‘I will be back’ will be that film for Sharvari which every young actress searches for. And Diljit, who became our focus in the story, is an artist like water. Any emotion, any expression, any scene… Diljeet can do no wrong.
Danish Pandor Has explored a different range than ‘Dhurandhar’. Manish Choudhary has looked great in a positive character after a long time. Even before you can recognize Sanjay Suri, he leaves an impact on you with his work. The performance of senior actor Rajat Kapoor, who plays the role of Sardarji’s younger brother, and each supporting actor has given fuel to ‘I will be back’.
Imtiaz had already left no stone unturned. AR Rahman’s music elevated the story further. There is magic of Rahman in the songs. But the way he has used only harmonium at the most important places in the background score is amazing. Each and every department of ‘I will be back’ has done such a great job that everyone’s efforts come together to weave a wonderful cinematic magic.
Imtiaz Ali’s best film
Most of the time, people like us come to media screenings, armed with the skills of our film understanding and preparing to cut and peel the film. But as soon as I progressed a bit in ‘I will come back’, all these people handed over their tools and weapons to Imtiaz. In the first half, when Imtiaz was starting to create his magic in the film, some people were definitely seen touching phones and some making noises. But within half an hour ‘I will be back’ was on everyone’s shoulders.
By the time the film ended, people had cried several rounds; sounds of sobbing were coming from all sides in the theatre. I don’t even remember when and how much I cried in a movie. People did not want to get up from their seats. Nowadays, most of the people attending media screenings come from the group of content creators-YouTubers, who run away with their cameras and mics before the climax is over. And what a wonderful thing it is for cinema that on one hand we are celebrating Pakistan’s call to enter the house and kill in ‘Dhurandhar’. On the other hand, with ‘I will come back’, we are touching the hearts of those people whose roots have now gone to the other side.
It is possible that while reading this review you may feel that I got too carried away with emotions. But when Imtiaz’s love stories strike the right note, they become such a wave that they decide the direction of your flow. And here I have promised Imtiaz that ‘I will come back’ for another show in the theatre.
