While other companies like Amazon and Oracle are directly laying off people, Microsoft is adopting a softer approach.

Microsoft HR head Amy Coleman said in the message that the company wants that the employees who will get this offer can take further decisions on their own free will and with the support of the company. This offer can be sent by the company to the employees till May 7. But before we understand why the company is doing this? So let us tell you that the company had fired 15 thousand employees last year.

The oldest employees can leave the company of their own free will.

According to reports, Microsoft is giving this offer only to its most senior or oldest employees. The offer is for those whose age and work experience combined is 70 years or more. This means that an employee who is 50 years old and has worked for 20 years is eligible for this offer or an employee who is 55 years old and has worked for 15 years is also eligible for this offer. It is believed that the company has 1.25 lakh employees in America, out of which about 7% i.e. about 8,750 people are eligible for this offer.

Let us tell you that earlier Google had given this option to its employees but it was on a small level. But let us tell you that this is not a layoff. The employee has the option whether he accepts this offer or not. The company feels that not all people but some people will definitely accept this option. For the first time, Microsoft is making such an offer on such a large scale, which makes it seem that the company wants many people to gradually come out on their own.

Why is the company doing this?

The biggest question arising here is why is the company doing this? So let us tell you that there are two main reasons behind taking this step. Firstly, older employees also have higher salaries and secondly, senior employees will use AI the least.

It is quite clear that the salary of senior employees is also higher. A person who has been working for 20 years will get more salary than a person who started working 2 years ago. In such a situation, the company can remove one senior and hire many juniors, which will save in salary. Microsoft can invest that money in AI. Companies like Google and Amazon are spending billions and Microsoft cannot lag behind. The company is also adopting AI. Microsoft, which previously relied on external companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, is now building its own AI models under the leadership of Mustafa Suleiman. The company already has more than 70 Copilot-branded AI tools and there are no signs of growth slowing down.

Technology develops with every generation and the new generation is always open-minded towards new technology and eager to learn. But senior employees consider the old ways of working to be correct and want to do that kind of work. For example, look at your parents, they too may not be as knowledgeable about new technology as you and your younger ones may be ahead of you in terms of watching reels.
