During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Europe tour, relations between India and Netherlands reached a new height. In the meeting held in The Hague on Saturday, PM Modi and Netherlands Prime Minister Rob Jetten announced to upgrade the relations between the two countries to “Strategic Partnership”. During this period, 17 agreements were signed in many important sectors including defence, semiconductor, critical minerals, green hydrogen, energy, agriculture and technology.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, both the leaders expressed deep concern over the current situation in West Asia. In particular, both countries expressed concern about the increasing tension in the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on global energy supply. PM Modi and Rob Jetton said that uninterrupted movement and trade on international sea routes is very important for the economic stability of the entire world. Both leaders expressed support for “freedom of navigation” i.e. safe and open sea routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
This statement has come at a time when global oil supply is being affected due to tension between America, Israel and Iran. About 20 percent of the world’s energy supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, so instability in this area remains a matter of concern for the entire world.
PM Modi discussed Ukraine war with Dutch PM
PM Modi and Jeten also discussed Ukraine war. Both leaders said that the solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict is possible only through dialogue and diplomacy. He stressed the need to respect the United Nations Charter and international laws.
During the meeting India and NetherlandsLaunched the “Strategic Partnership Roadmap”, through which cooperation will be further strengthened in the areas of trade, defence, technology and innovation. Both the countries also prepared a big roadmap for the development of green hydrogen.
India-Netherlands increased cooperation in defense sector also
A big decision was also taken in the defense sector. Both countries agreed to create a defense industrial roadmap, under which defense equipment and systems can be jointly manufactured. There will also be focus on technology transfer and joint venture.

The initiative to link the “Semicon Competence Center” of the Netherlands with the Indian Semiconductor Mission was welcomed to enhance cooperation in the semiconductor sector. Apart from this, it was also agreed to strengthen the supply chain of critical minerals.
Trade increased between India and Netherlands
Trade between India and Netherlands is continuously increasing. Trade between the two countries will reach $27.8 billion in 2024-25. Netherlands is also the fourth largest foreign investor in India. Whereas Rotterdam Port is considered an important gateway to Europe for Indian exporters.
During this, both the countries also showed unity on the issue of terrorism. The Prime Minister of Netherlands strongly condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack and assured to stand with India against terrorism. Both the leaders said that it is necessary to adopt a “zero tolerance” policy against terrorism and there should not be a double standard on this issue.
