The Supreme Court of Nepal has put a stay on the controversial decision of Prime Minister Balen Shah’s government, under which heavy custom duty was being collected even on goods worth more than Rs 100 being taken from India to Nepal.

Actually, after this new rule of Balen Shah government, India-Nepal A strange situation had arisen at the customs posts on the border. After this decision, people traveling to the border carrying goods of daily use were facing a lot of problems.

The customs department and the security personnel deployed there were taking strict action even on small items of daily use like packets of chips, biscuits and bananas held by the common people going from India to Nepal. Due to the nominal limit of ₹100, heated arguments and disputes were being seen every day between common Nepali citizens and security personnel.

The decision was challenged in the court

Advocates Amitesh Pandit, Akash Mahato, Suyog Singh and Bikram Shah had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court of Nepal against this arbitrary decision of the Balen government. Hearing this on Friday, the joint court of Justice Hari Prasad Fuyal and Justice Tek Prasad Dhungana issued a historic order.

The judges clearly said in their order that it is completely wrong for the Finance Ministry and the local administration to impose such strictness on items of daily use. Issuing an interim order, the court said, “Until the final decision of the court on this matter is reached, the Ministry of Finance and the Customs Department will not collect any tax from the common people at the border on goods of daily use. The situation at the border should be kept as before (normal).”

Traders say that this order will reduce unnecessary problems and disputes at the border and will provide relief to small businessmen.
