For the first time, the Sri Lankan government has directly accused a former intelligence chief of masterminding the devastating ‘Easter Sunday’ bombings six years ago. 279 people lost their lives in these attacks.
The investigation found that retired Major General Tuan Suresh Salle played a key role in planning and directing the attacks carried out by Islamic extremists in April 2019, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament on Wednesday.

Addressing Parliament, Wijepala said that investigators have collected evidence that directly links Suresh Salle to this conspiracy. He said, ‘The investigation revealed that retired Major General Tuan Suresh Salle conspired with and strategically directed Islamic extremists until they carried out the attacks.’

Wijepala further said, just three weeks before the attack, Salle met Muslim men to gather information about the location and the gathering.

Salle, who was arrested in February on charges of aiding and abetting the blasts, has denied any role in the attacks. According to the government, he has been detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) of Sri Lanka.
Wijepala told Parliament that Salle has been admitted to hospital after he started a hunger strike during his detention. Following his arrest, protests broke out in Colombo, where opposition activists demanded his release and questioned the government’s handling of the case.
These new revelations have also drawn attention towards former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Officials have confirmed that investigators have obtained a court order barring Rajapaksa from leaving the country while the investigation continues.
Salle’s stature had increased significantly after Rajapaksa became President in 2019. Soon after Rajapaksa assumed office, he was appointed head of Sri Lanka’s State Intelligence Service. Earlier he had led military intelligence operations.
