WWW inventor says AI may become more powerful than its creator | India News
Artificial intelligence has an exciting role to play in areas such as drug discovery, scientific advancement and disease treatment. But given the speed at which it’s evolving, AI has a real chance of becoming more powerful than its creators, warns Tim Berners-Lee, the British computer scientist and inventor of the World Wide Web. Humanity has to figure out how to deal with superintelligence, Berners-Lee said, striking a note of caution at a time when companies and governments seem to be racing to develop AI without really thinking about the consequences.
Speaking to Jaya Bhattachari Rose, Berners-Lee described ChatGP as a “phase change”, surprising her with its conversational power. He emphasized that the critical question is who does an AI work for. He argued for assistants serving the user’s best interests — akin to a doctor’s duty — rather than corporate incentives. He linked this to his SOLID project and his company’s work on user-controlled data “pods,” which aim to restore agency to individuals by controlling and selectively sharing their personal data, including child-safe configurations with parental controls.Berners-Lee also contrasts the democratic spirit of the early web with today’s platform-dominated experience. Initially, individuals could publish their own websites and participate equally with major organizations.
