Lyricist Sahil Sultanpuri, who wrote the song ‘Ghoomar’ in the film ‘The Kerala Story 2’, is in the news these days. In a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, he told that he wrote this song in one night during Durga Puja. Sahil says that the song is inspired by Maa Bhavani, Rajasthani culture and Indian tradition, hence he felt more responsibility while writing it. He also said that rather than the controversy surrounding the film, it is more important that the audience themselves go to the theater and watch the film and decide. In the conversation, he also spoke openly about his struggles, industry experience and upcoming projects. Here are some highlights… Question: Your song ‘Ghoomar’ from ‘The Kerala Story 2’ is much talked about. How did it start? Answer: Mannan Shah Bhai’s call came for this film. He said that a Ghoomar song is needed in the film. At that time I was in Durga Puja in Kolkata. He sent the tune and said it was needed today. Staying awake the whole night, I wrote the song and sent it at around 2 in the night. Question: What was going on in your mind while writing this song? Answer: Responsibility increases when you introduce a culture. Ghoomar is the identity of Rajasthan, so I tried to convey the same respect and emotion in the words. The song is related to Maa Bhavani and Indian culture, hence it was written with great devotion. Question: Did you do any special research for this? Answer: Yes, some information was already there because I had earlier also done a film and a serial with Rajasthani backdrop. Apart from this, after understanding Marwari words and culture from the internet and his own experience, he included them in the song. Question: How did the film’s producer Vipul Amritlal Shah express his confidence in you? Answer: I am very grateful to him. Earlier, the song written by me in his film ‘Commando 3’ was ‘Aankhiyan Milavanga’, which was liked by the people very much. Because of that trust he gave me another chance. Question: There were a lot of controversies earlier regarding ‘The Kerala Story 2’. How did you see it? Answer: I believe that every film has its own issue. If anyone has any objection then he can express his opinion, but the decision should be taken by the audience. People should go to the theater and watch the film and then decide what is right. Question: Some filmmakers also opposed the film, what is your opinion on this? Answer: I do not oppose anyone. Everyone has his own thinking. But I believe there should be a way to say anything. If you have to give suggestion, it should be given with respect. Question: When did you get your first big opportunity after coming to Mumbai? Answer: I came to Mumbai around 1995. I got my first opportunity in T-Series. In 1999, we did an album named ‘Jeetenge Hum Hindustani’ on the Cricket World Cup. Question: How many songs have you written so far? Answer: About 300 songs have been registered. Some in films, some in albums and some in different projects. Question: What projects are you working on next? Answer: There are some projects lined up, but it is difficult to name them right now. Many times songs in films are removed later, so I like to tell only when everything is decided. Question: What would you like to say to the audience? Answer: Just watch the movie and also love the song ‘Ghoomar’. If people like our work, that is the greatest happiness for us.
