Water will be supplied to Gangtok houses once a day due to shortage | India News
Gangtok: In view of acute water shortage at various resource points due to insufficient rainfall during winter, water will be supplied to serviced areas in the state capital once a day, a senior official said on Wednesday.A trial run is being conducted by engineers of the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) to regulate water supply in various areas of the state capital and will be implemented once the process is finalised, he said.“Due to acute shortage of natural resources we will supply water to the service area of Gangtok and only once a day,” PHED secretary Shailendra Sharma told reporters here.Since drinking water is the basis of life, household consumption should be prioritized and accordingly, commercial establishments should reduce operations slightly during this critical time, he said.Amidst the prevailing scarcity of water due to the drying up of natural sources due to lack of rainfall for months, curbing wastage has become imperative as continued dry conditions could lead to acute shortages in the coming months. In view of the prevailing situation, all households are requested to take measures to avoid wastage and consider installing float valves to ensure equal flow to low pressure houses in case tanks overflow due to high differential pressure, he said.Sharma warned that strict action could be taken if any wastage is detected.“Together, through responsible use and collective efforts, we can protect this most important resource and ensure equitable access for every family,” the PHED official said.It may be noted that since November last year, Gangtok has been facing water shortage for some time due to the unprecedented situation of inadequate rainfall.A project under ADB funding to bring water from alternative sources is already in advanced stages of completion, on the instructions of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
