Srinagar: A 63-year-old man arrested for trying to shoot former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah at a wedding in Jammu has said in a viral video that he had been planning to kill the National Conference president for the past two decades. Police have not verified the claims.“I wanted to kill Farooq Abdullah for the last 20 years. It was my personal agenda. I tried today but it didn’t happen. The weapon is my personal weapon and it was issued to me,” he said. In the video, the accused also says that he is 63 years old and is not doing any work.

SP City South Jammu Ajay Sharma said that there was an incident of firing using licensed weapons at a wedding party where former Chief Minister JK Dr Farooq Abdullah was also present. “It falls in PS Gangyal’s JD. The accused has been arrested and detailed investigation is underway. There is no terror angle,” Sharma wrote in X, adding that the former MP is unharmed.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Chief Priest of Kashmir wrote in X “The news of the attempt on the life of Dr. Farooq Abdullah Sahib at an event in Jammu is disturbing and reprehensible. I am relieved to know that he escaped unhurt. Someone with a loaded weapon came so close to him and opened fire, it needs to be thoroughly investigated.” People’s Conference Chairman and MLA Sajad Lone condemned the incident and said “Condemn the cowardly firing on Dr Farooq Sahib and Surinder Chowdhury Ji and Nasir Aslam Sahib. Thank God they are safe.” PDP MLA Waheed Parra, however, described the incident as shocking. “It is shocking and deeply unfortunate to hear of the despicable attack on Dr. Farooq Abdullah Sahib in Jammu. Violence against such a senior leader is absolutely unacceptable and condemned in the strongest possible terms. Wishing him safety and long life.”Ruling National Conference MP Agha Ruhullah Mehdi condemned the incident as despicable.He said that such violence was deeply worrying and stressed that those responsible should be dealt with strictly according to the law.
