VARANASI: Police have charged three women with theft for allegedly stealing underwear worth around Rs 10,000 from a shop in Chetganj area, an officer said on Friday.Chetganj Station House Officer Vijay Kumar Shukla said that shop owner Sudeep Singh said that the theft took place after three women came to his shop on February 24.“When the salesgirl went inside to fetch the items, the women allegedly stuffed undergarments worth around Rs 10,000 into their bags,” he said, quoting the complaint.“Singh detected the theft during stock verification and later went to Chetganj police station to file a complaint,” he said.The shopkeeper submitted the CCTV footage of the incident.Investigators identified one of the accused women as a former president of a business association.After an alleged video of the incident went viral, one of the accused, Sunita Soni, gave a statement in her defence.He said that he had gone to the market and the women with him were from Jaunpur.He claimed that some items were not available at the store and left his mobile number there to collect them after a week.“I don’t know what the women who came with me took from the shop. I will fully cooperate with the shop owner and the police administration,” he said. PTI
