Growing up in the Air India Colony of Vasant Vihar, Delhi, the flight of dreams of Trupti Dimri started from the cultural environment of her home. Father Dinesh Dimri was an active artiste of Ramleela stage, but circumstances did not allow him to convert his dream of acting into a profession.

Perhaps the same incomplete dream started taking shape in Tripti’s eyes. While studying from Delhi Public School and completing her graduation degree in Sociology from Sri Aurobindo College, she got a small modeling opportunity, which took her to Mumbai. Started with Santoor advertisement, but the path ahead was not easy. Relatives taunted that no one would marry after becoming an actress.

He was judged in the industry on his looks and appearance. Faced rejection in auditions and was commented on not looking like a typical heroine. Many times his confidence was broken, but the support of his parents remained his strength.

The struggle did not end even after debut with ‘Poster Boys’. A sensitive film like ‘Laila Majnu’ gave recognition to acting, but commercial failure again brought it to zero. Trupti Dimri was born on 23 February 1994 in Delhi. His family is originally from Garhwal in Uttarakhand, but due to his father Dinesh Dimri’s job in Air India, the family settled in Delhi. He lives in Air India Colony, Vasant Vihar.

Trupti’s father had a special love for acting and stage. He used to organize Ramlila and Dussehra celebrations for 10 days every year and was a member of the Ramlila Committee for about 30 years. In childhood, he also played characters like Ram and Ravana. In an interview given to Filmfare, Trupti had told that there was an atmosphere of art and culture in the house, which created an inclination towards acting in her.

Start of studies and modeling

Trupti Dimri studied till 12th from Delhi Public School. After this he did graduation in sociology from Sri Aurobindo College, New Delhi. During college, a friend of her brother did a photoshoot of her in the park and sent the pictures to a modeling agency. The agency called her for audition and she got selected.

Journey to Mumbai and entry into films

Trupti got her first opportunity in the advertisement of Santoor soap, which was shot in Mumbai. After this project, she decided to stay in Mumbai and started auditioning for films. During this time, he got an opportunity to play a small role in Sridevi starrer film ‘Mom’. His film journey started from here.

Relatives said the marriage would not take place

During this time, Trupti’s relatives came to know that she was trying for acting. Relatives started taunting Trupti’s parents. Trupti says- ‘Some relatives told my parents that if your daughter goes into films, she will not be able to get married. Such comments were not easy for my parents, but still they supported me.

In ‘Poster Boys’, Trupti played the character of Riya opposite Shreyas Talpade. It was directed by Shreyas himself.

‘Poster Boys’ reassured my parents

Debuted with ‘Poster Boys’ in 2017. At that time I had just come to Mumbai and did not know what to do. The city of Mumbai seemed alien. She was rejected for the first time in the audition for this film. Then I was called for audition again and got selected.

Got a chance to work with Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Shreyas Talpade in the very first film. There was a lot of nervousness at that time, but there was also excitement. It was difficult to make a place in the industry, yet I felt proud. This film gave confidence to the family. Got the confidence to stand in front of the camera. Earlier I was very shy, but performing in front of hundred people every day took away my fear. Decided that I would never stop.

Difficult for outsiders to make a place in the industry

But making one’s place as an outsider was not easy. The audition process continued for about one and a half years. Sometimes three-four auditions had to be given in a single day. Very little information was given about the audition, but the expectation was that you would bring the character to life. So many people only got one or two chances.

Received taunts regarding looks and appearance

Initially I was judged on my looks and appearance. I was told that you are very simple, you do not look like a typical heroine, you are not glamorous. Such comments broke my confidence many times. That period taught me a lot about the need for patience, consistency and reinventing myself every time. Even after getting the work, the challenge does not end. You have to bring something new every time, so that neither the audience nor you get bored.

Cried during the shooting of ‘Laila Majnu’

The film ‘Laila Majnu’ released in 2018 was very special for me. Because this was my first lead role film. During the shooting of this film, I got to learn the nuances of acting. That film taught me a lot. However, there were many challenges during the shooting of the film as we used to shoot continuously for 20 or 24 hours in the valleys of Kashmir.

Many times during that time I cried, wondering what I was doing, because nothing was easy. We used to go to the homes of local people and eat there, and I developed a deep love for Kashmir. When the film didn’t do well, I was very disappointed because we were back to zero. And then we started auditioning again.

In ‘Bulbul’, Trupti played the character of Bulbul, a girl victim of patriarchy in 19th century Bengal, who takes revenge by becoming a witch. Played the role of a struggling playback singer in ‘Kala’.

Was scared while working in ‘Bulbul’ and ‘Kala’

While working in ‘Bulbul’, there was a doubt in my mind that I didn’t know whether people would like my character or not. But people liked the film. Then the offer of ‘Kala’ came. I was afraid that the characters might look similar, because the director of ‘Kala’ was also Anvita Dutt. But he assured that both are different characters. Both the films got the love of the audience.

The film ‘Animal’ was released on 1 December 2023.

National crush created by ‘Animal’

Trupti’s popularity skyrocketed in the year 2023, when she was seen in a supporting role in the film ‘Animal’ with Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna. Even though his character in the film was limited in terms of screen time, his impact was so deep that the audience accepted him wholeheartedly.

His easy smile, the innocence of his eyes and the way he played the emotional layers of the character made him the center of discussion overnight. After the release, there was a huge jump in her Instagram followers and brands lined up. She also received a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress for this film.

After this character, her fans started calling her ‘Bhabhi 2’. Trupti was also described as the country’s new ‘national crush’.

Trupti says, “I always had faith in my work. The love I got after ‘Animal’ is very special for me. It is not just popularity, but also the responsibility to live up to the expectations of the audience. Every film is a new beginning for me. I want people to remember me by my characters and not by just one tag.”

Tripti believes that there will be ups and downs in life. She says, “The most important thing is to understand that you are doing right and taking care of yourself. If there are only ups in life, then there is no opportunity to learn. Real lessons are learned when you are in the down phase. Only then you realize what is lacking in you. Otherwise we do not ask ourselves the right questions. That silence is very important, which brings you closer to yourself. Even today I am making mistakes, which will turn into lessons tomorrow. This is life. Well, what is fun without ups and downs?”
