The Supreme Court on Friday accused musician A. R. Rahman and the producers of the film Ponniyin Selvan 2 (PS-2) to give appropriate mention to the contribution of the Dagarvani tradition in the film’s song ‘Veera Raja Veera’. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was hearing this on the petition of Dhrupad singer Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar. Dagar has challenged the order of the Delhi High Court in September 2025, in which it was said that there is prima facie no evidence that the junior Dagar Brothers were the authors of the composition of Shiv Stuti. During the hearing, the Supreme Court said, “The first presentation does not mean that he is the author of the composition. The question is whether this composition is your original or has it been taken from the Dagar tradition?” On behalf of Dagar, it was said that he was not claiming the originality of the raga, but the special composition, which was prepared by his father and uncle. On this, the bench said that the Dagarvani tradition has made a great contribution to classical music and it should be respected. The court told senior lawyer Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Rehman, “If there was no contribution from the gharanas, how would modern singers have progressed? At least there should be a mention of the tradition.” Singhvi said in reply that no objection was raised on earlier presentations, but this time objection has been raised. The court has fixed the next hearing of the case on February 20.
