States must drive next wave of reforms for 2047 goal: Niti CEO | India News
NEW DELHI: If India wants to become a developed country by 2047, the next big wave of reforms will have to come from the states, as most of the heavy lifting has been done at the Centre, Policy Commission CEO BVR Subrahmanyam said this on Saturday.“Most of the action in India is now at the state level. The Indian government has probably done 90% of what it had to do,” Subrahmanyam said at an event organized by the All India Management Association. He said, “land state, labor state, electricity state, water supply state, road state”.“Differences in state-level governance now determine growth outcomes. States that advance reforms, others risk lagging behind,” added Subrahmanyam.India’s demographic profile gives it a significant opportunity, he said. “India is in for good times… the population is behind us, our capacity is behind us and we have the wind in our sails,” he said, however, adding that sustained high growth is needed to become a developed country. At the event, Vishal Sikka, founder of Bhayanai Systems, said India must build its own AI stack and not depend on systems it does not understand or control.
