AICC spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said the Congress opposes “shifting the relative strength of states” in the Lok Sabha, criticizing the “hasty proposal” for a “proportionate” increase in parliamentary seats. He said such a move would permanently harm southern states like TN and Kerala along with northern states, as well as north-eastern states, north-western states like Punjab and smaller states. Ramesh said there are informal inputs that the Modi government is planning a new delimitation law with a 50% increase in all state seats in the Lok Sabha and the Vidhan Sabha.
Citing Uttar Pradesh and Kerala, Ramesh said seats in UP could go from 80 to 120, while Kerala could increase by 20 to 30. The gap would widen to 90 before 60 seats, the Congress leader argued.
He said the opposition parties will take a joint stand and the government’s strategy of dividing political parties will not succeed. Citing the Registrar General of India’s statement that census results would be available in 2027, Ramesh also dismissed the government’s argument for adding quotas and restrictions.
