Recurrent miscarriage: A medical expert gives a perspective

Repeated miscarriages can be deeply distressing for couples trying to conceive, often leaving them searching for answers and hope. “Although many couples experience the emotional pain of recurrent pregnancy loss, the underlying cause is not the same in every case. Recurrent miscarriage can be due to various reasons, and the treatment must be tailored to the specific reason,” says Dr Srivani Kotha, Director and Head, 9M Fertility at Ankura Hospital. He also adds that recurrent pregnancy loss is when a woman experiences two or more pregnancy losses in a row before 20 weeks of pregnancy.

What causes recurrent miscarriage?

There could be several reasons for this Recurrent miscarriageAnd the underlying cause is not the same in every case. One of the most common causes is an abnormal number of chromosomes in the developing fetus. When this happens, the body recognizes that the pregnancy is not developing normally and it may terminate spontaneously. “Although chromosomal abnormalities are often associated with advanced maternal age, they can also occur in younger women,” says Dr Srivani. In some cases, the uterus may not be suitable for healthy implantation. Structural abnormalities including fibroids and polyps may account for such conditions. Endocrine problems such as thyroid disorders and diabetes can cause spontaneous pregnancy loss. “In a certain autoimmune condition called antiphospholipid syndrome, the body produces antibodies that increase the risk of blood clotting. It can interfere with the placenta and affect the developing pregnancy,” adds Dr Srivani, citing another reason. In addition to the above medical factors, environmental factors can also have a significant impact on pregnancy. Smoking, alcohol consumption, excess body weight, and high levels of stress are known to contribute to recurrent pregnancy loss. “In modern times, the impact of environmental factors on pregnancy has increased manifold. These factors not only affect recurrent pregnancy loss but also overall fertility rates,” explains Dr. Shrivani.

How to recognize pregnancy loss symptoms

Symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain or cramping, persistent back pain, tissue shedding or a sudden loss of pregnancy symptoms may indicate possible pregnancy loss and require immediate medical advice. Women who experience dizziness or weakness should also be evaluated quickly.

Treatment options for recurrent pregnancy loss

“Treatment of recurrent pregnancy loss depends on identifying and addressing the underlying cause. A thorough evaluation is done with an individualized approach, which may include imaging studies like blood tests for hormones and autoimmune disorders, genetic tests and ultrasound to evaluate the uterus,” says Dr Srivani. Management may include correcting uterine abnormalities with surgery, treating hormonal imbalances, managing chronic medical conditions, or using medications for autoimmune disorders. Lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and managing stress are equally important. “In selected individual cases where conventional measures are not adequate, advanced assisted reproductive treatment can be helpful for couples in achieving successful pregnancy,” assures Dr Srivani. Recurrent pregnancy loss Can be emotionally distressing, but it’s not uncommon. Modern medical science has evolved manifold, and conditions that were difficult a decade ago can often be managed effectively today. By being aware and taking timely care, couples can achieve positive results,” concludes Dr Srivani.Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed in the story are the independent professional judgment of the experts and we take no responsibility for the accuracy of their opinions.
