Rajya Sabha chairman rejects impeachment motion against Election Commission chief Gyanesh Kumar

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan on Monday rejected the impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, who has faced heat from the opposition over the Pan-India Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the “ritual” of the recent assembly elections.With 130 Lok Sabha MPs and 63 Rajya Sabha members signing the motion, a notice was given for the removal of the head of the electoral body for the first time.The 10-page long notice contains seven charge sheets. Allegations ranged from biased behavior by the CEC to widespread disenfranchisement of voters.The opposition also raised the issue of the way the CEC handled the SIR in previous elections like Bihar and the upcoming elections in states like West Bengal; his “proven misconduct”; His partial behavior towards a political party is also a matter mentioned in the notice.CEC piloted the removal notice TMCIt came in the wake of mounting allegations against Gyanesh Kumar by opposition parties.They accused the CEC of being biased and aiding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Other opposition parties are also attacking the CEC, with Rahul Gandhi running a “vote-stealing” campaign.Reacting to the rejection of the notice, the TMC Rajya Sabha member said: “BJP continues to make a mockery of our great Parliament”.BJP leaders criticized the opposition’s proposal, arguing that political parties should focus on electoral contests instead of targeting the Election Commission.The motion, which was rejected, requires a special majority in Parliament as per parliamentary rules.
